Pepper Spray Safety Classes
In April the College of Marin (COM) Police Department will hold two pepper spray safety classes open to all COM students, faculty, and staff. The cost to attend the two-hour class is $20 per person and includes an inert canister of pepper spray (training can), a pepper spray authorization card, and a pepper spray canister. To be authorized to carry pepper spray on COM's campuses an individual must first get permission from the Campus Police. Permission to carry pepper spray on campus will be granted once the class has been completed.
What is Pepper Spray?
Pepper spray is a very effective, non-lethal weapon that temporarily disables attackers. It’s made from cayenne pepper and gets into the eyes, nostrils, and skin causing an intense burning sensation that lasts up to thirty minutes. When an assailant is sprayed with pepper spray, their eyes will water, their throat will constrict, and they will find it very difficult to breathe. In short, this spray is designed to temporarily disable an assailant, allowing time to escape.
Pepper spray is very easy to use, but like any other type of self-defense device, it’s always a good idea to be trained on proper usage. This class teaches proper handling and use of pepper spray as well as the best way to carry the canister and the importance of keeping it within reach.
