November 15th, 2016 - 10:39am

Veterans Resource Specialist Marijke Gray has been working to schedule training opportunities at COM to better equip our faculty, staff, and administrators with tools to support veteran students and also provide information and understanding about their experiences. Below is information about the upcoming Combat to Community Training offered at COM on Friday, December 2.

Swords to Plowshares’ Combat to Community Training is a series of accredited cultural competency curricula developed by the Institute for Veteran Policy team with the purpose of educating the community to address the challenges veterans face re-integrating and the unique skills they acquire in service.

The training is developed for professionals who support veterans and active service members (ex. mental health professionals, counselors, faculty, staff, administrators) to understand and integrate the following into their work:

  • Commonly shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that often characterize service in the military
  • How deployment, combat experience, service related injuries, and disability can impact veterans
  • How veteran or military family status can inform interactions and services
  • Potential resources to refer veterans and families to for supportive services

Swords to Plowshares is nationally recognized for its expertise in providing comprehensive services and promoting and protecting the rights of veterans. Their training incorporates knowledge developed by experts in the fields of veteran culture and direct services with practical tools and resources to increase your understanding and to improve your interactions with veterans.
