The first workshop in the Spring 2017 Student Success Speaker Series is being held today, February 8, from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Deedy Lounge (next to the Cafeteria in the Student Services Center).
The Student Activities and Advocacy Office invites you to participate in an Escalation Workshop organized by the One Love Foundation and facilitated by two members of our very own COM community: Director of Student Activities and Advocacy Sadika Sulaiman Hara, and ASCOM Secretary Claire Zerbe. During the workshop, you will learn about the differences between a healthy relationship and an abusive relationship through interactive videos, facilitated discussions, and personal reflection. You will also learn about intervention techniques for friends and family who are in abusive relationships. Come and make a difference in someone's life.

From the One Love Foundation:
“94% of adults in the US will never perpetrate violence against their partner yet 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men will experience relationship violence in their lifetime. We want to increase the sense amongst the 95% of young people who are not perpetrating abuse that this is their social issue to solve and that they have the ability to begin working for change within their communities.
For too long, the ‘good’ guys and girls have been silent on an issue that dramatically impacts them and their friends. One Love is waking them up, equipping them with the tools they need, and helping them find their voices. If we can change the social climate that currently enables abuse to take place and reduce the amount of social capital required for bystanders to intervene, we believe we can ultimately change the unacceptable statistics around relationship violence.”
